Third-generation IVF, also known as preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), offers the possibility of gender selection. While PGD’s primary purpose is to screen embryos for genetic abnormalities before implantation, the technology allows for the identification of sex chromosomes (XX for female, XY for male). This means that couples undergoing PGD can choose to implant only embryos of the desired sex. It’s important to note, however, that access to gender selection through PGD is often restricted by law and ethical guidelines, generally only permitted for medical reasons related to preventing sex-linked diseases. The use of PGD for solely social sex selection remains controversial and is frequently prohibited.
